Mahwelereng Library
A library placed within an existing sports node, designed as a thoroughfare with no back or front.
The project forms part of an existing sports node characterised by a stadium, a public recreational park and a dam. The building is placed within the public space, at the far end of the stadium, as a strategic node intended to cultivate activity around the perimeter of the sports node.
It is intended to foster a sense of safety for pedestrians through constant visual surveillance, and to generate a public outdoor room where young people can find a corner to gather and elderly people a place to rest. The building houses the most essential function and is designed as a thoroughfare, with no sense of back or front.
Pre-contract: project inception and appraisal; concept and design development; technical and procurement documentation. Post-contract: construction-phase contract administration, technical inspections and quality control.
