Our BIM in healthcare
How LEMEG Architects uses Building Information Modelling to coordinate hospital design across disciplines.
Hospitals combine clinical planning, structure, civil works, electrical, ICT and mechanical systems in one building. Building Information Modelling (BIM) allows each discipline’s model to be combined and checked before construction. This page describes how LEMEG applies it, as recorded in its Quality Management System (QMS) and in project records.
A BIM Execution Plan for every healthcare project
LEMEG’s BIM Management procedure makes a BIM Execution Plan mandatory for healthcare projects, for projects that need federated model coordination and for projects that use Autodesk Forma or another common data environment. The plan records the BIM objectives, the approved BIM uses, the software and file formats, the model structure, coordinates and naming, who is responsible for each model, the level of model information needed at each work stage, and how models are exchanged and checked.
Where a client issues its own BIM requirements, LEMEG reviews them and aligns its workflow. Where the client’s requirement is more stringent than the QMS, the higher requirement applies.
Federated models and clash detection
On large hospital projects each discipline works in its own model and the models are federated for review. Clashes between architecture, structure, civil, electrical, ICT and mechanical services are identified in the combined model before they reach site, then logged and tracked to resolution. The consortium’s model-publishing and verification platform on Tshilidzini Regional Hospital is Autodesk Forma, which Autodesk renamed from Autodesk Construction Cloud in March 2026.
Model coordination is a standing agenda item at every fortnightly consortium coordination meeting on that project, which LEMEG chairs as Consortium Lead.
Healthcare room data
LEMEG’s BIM procedure lists healthcare room data coordination, schedules, quantity information, asset information and healthcare planning among the BIM uses a project plan can include. The level of model information is set in proportion to the work stage and does not exceed the agreed scope of services unless approved as an additional service.
Digital handover
Where a project requires IFC, COBie, asset information or digital handover deliverables, the BIM Execution Plan states the close-out model requirements and who updates the record information. It distinguishes design-intent models, construction coordination models, contractor as-built information and final record models.
Standards and controls
- Revit standards and Revit family standards govern how models and components are built.
- A Digital Information Exchange standard governs how information moves between parties.
- Internal model checks cover model health, warnings, templates, worksets, view templates, families and linked models before information is issued.
- Access rights, folder structure, workflow status and the control of superseded files are defined for any common data environment.
