Introduction

The house is designed as a buffer between two streets sited within the suburban residential setting in Nirvana. This 450m2 building is constructed on a site with a major axis running North/South. This became the key generator for the defragmented setup of the house, that is, three wings which define the intimacy gradient. The brief was for a modern building with a sense of a home and low scale, a seamless transition between the street and the house, the uncompromising attention to detail and a balance of light shades of the solids and voids. A seamless transition between the street and the house was achieved through a diagonal recess deep into the property with a wide driveway and garden.

A seamless transition between the street and the house was achieved through a diagonal recess deep into the property with a wide driveway and garden.

The entrance is defined by two major elements, the one is the large garage door recessed deep into the mass, while the other is the transparent extrusion characterised by Rhodesian Teak timber slats. The ingredient of fun and exhilaration on the face of this house is the juxtaposition of materials, slim circular steel columns, timber slats, roof detail and the masonry mass. The intimacy gradient is defined by three major wings arranged diagonally along the site and positioned for maximum solar benefits. These wings share an outdoor courtyard with a swimming pool and garden. The first wing directly from the street house public and semi public spaces, that is, the lounge, kitchen, dining and the garages. The next intermediate wing house semi-private spaces characterised by a large high volume living room with a direct access to the swimming pool. This intermediate wing rises higher above the rest of the house and acts as the focal point from all angles. The third innermost wing houses the private spaces and contains all the four bedrooms. These bedrooms have been positioned to face North with large windows for both natural light and solar gains during winter months.
